The Story Behind Our Board Shorts Prints
With the development of the new generation surfboards back in the 60's, a new trend for surfers in Hawaii was taking popularity. During this time, the local surfers created a unique style in board shorts design. Seemed to be kahiko (traditional) by the people of Hawaii to save the empty 100 lb. rice sacks. The makuahine (mother) of the surfers would use these sacks to make surf shorts. To be part of the hu'i hu'i (cool) gang, locals couldn't wait to show off their new hawaiian board shorts.
The print of each board short varied according to the rice sack used. Two popular brands of rice sacks used were the Y. HATA & CO., LTD. & those made by Shimaya Shoten. The "taki", as the shorts became known amongst locals, proved to be durable, but had it's drawbacks. Being made of 100% cotton back then, it was heavy when wet & was not quick drying in Hawaii's humidity.
Born & raised in the islands & still avid surfers, we have been on a journey to design surf board shorts that would bring back this punahele (favorite) style. This is our own design, style & unique cut. Today, made of microfiber, our rice bag shorts are quick drying & lightweight. These high performance hawaiian board shorts reduces drag in the water, is comfortable & durable. All this, with the prints taken from the original rice sacks, Molokai Generations brings back the tradition Hana Hou (one more time).
Our hawaiian surf apparel serves a dual purpose; great walking shorts, great swimming shorts for both men and women.
